We’re All Part of the Answer in the Rise of RNG

Setting up an industry sector takes time, patience and determination. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is no exception. But we have to acknowledge the progress we’ve made. Since our first connection in 2012, the pace has picked up. Contractual conditions and government support have provided fertile ground for project development: the year 2023 is proof of this.

The mobilization of the Quebec ecosystem around the RNG industry is paying off. Thanks to distributors, developers, investors, contractors, clients and government support, RNG is carving out an enviable place in the local energy landscape. Achievements over the past year include:

  • Reaching our regulatory target for the first time.
  • Signing of 6 RNG contracts in the last regulatory year, which put us on track to hit the 5% target by 2025.
  • Commissioning three new projects in Quebec: Waga at Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Waga at Chicoutimi and Ville de Québec’s Centre de biométhanisation de la matière organique.
  • Obtaining the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie support for some 15 projects that benefit from subsidies for their feasibility studies or investment.
  • Eight Quebec projects are now contributing to Énergir’s grid. At the same time, some 50 are at various stages of development.
  • The favorable decision by the Régie de l’énergie authorizing Énergir to deploy a 100% renewable energy offer for all new connections to its network as of April 2024.

From Chicoutimi to Brome, the pooling of our energies is already supporting the maturity of Quebec’s RNG sector. Quebec is leading the country in terms of the number of projects.
