GOVERNMENT POLICIES & LAW

Oregon Law Intensifies Carbon Reduction Efforts

Governor Kate Brown signed an executive order on Tuesday, March 10 that will expand and intensify Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program, also known as the low carbon fuel standard. This program is designed to reduce Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions; more specifically, it seeks to lessen the “lifecycle carbon intensity” of fuels produced by the state. This program was initially passed in 2009 and took effect in 2015. The plan has faced criticism for its potential to increase gas prices, inefficiency and supposed unlawfulness, and possibility to leave Oregon at an economic disadvantage when compared to nearby states.

UK recycling legislation proposals for 2023: The future of commercial food waste

Grant Keenan, Managing Director of Keenan Recycling, examines Scotland’s implementation of tighter food waste recycling legislation and what it will mean for the similar incoming UK government legislation. It’s no secret that sustainability has become more of a priority for businesses, their stakeholders and the public at large in the last five years that it ever was before. On an individual level this means recycling our household waste and making ethical consumer choices but when it comes to boardrooms there are more onerous considerations when it comes to managing waste.

50 MW biomass power plant begins operations in Spain

Spain-based power producer Greenalia announced on March 10 that its 50 megawatt (MW) biomass power plant in Curtis-Teixeiro, Spain, began operations ahead of schedule and is currently producing and selling electricity. According to Greenalia, the facility began selling electricity on March 1 following 19 months of construction. The plant is expected to generate enough energy to supply 250,000 customers while avoiding 393,973 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The facility has the capacity to consume 500,000 tons of forestry residue annually.

Refuelling station for natural gas HGVs opens at Warrington

The station is at Omega South, on the M62 and is one of four operated by CNG Fuels, who plan to add another six to eight stations over the next 12 months as it expands its network of HV refuelling stations to meet growing demand. They say demand for renewable biomethane compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG), the low-carbon and low-cost alternative to diesel for HGVs, has soared 800 per cent since 2017 and is set to more than double this year. The new station at Warrington and another at Northampton are capable of refuelling over 1,000 HGVs a day, more than doubling the 600-a-day capacity of existing stations at Leyland, and Crewe.

DE launches GreenTherm program to support renewable energy

Dominion Energy (DE)’s new GreenTherm program gives Utah and Idaho customers an easy and convenient way to support the development of renewable natural gas (RNG). The use of RNG results in a net reduction of greenhouse gases, which helps customers lower their carbon footprint. RNG is produced by capturing methane from existing waste streams and a variety of renewable and sustainable organic sources such as waste water, landfills, agricultural waste or food waste.Repurposing this naturally occurring methane for conventional uses like home heating is significantly more beneficial for our environment, since allowing this raw methane to be released into the environment is much more impactful as a greenhouse gas.

Biomethane demand increases by 800%, thanks to major UK companies

Demand for renewable biomethane compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) has increased by 800%, thanks to major companies adopting alternative fuels, according to CNG Fuels. The news follows the announcement that CNG Fuels is building to new refuelling stations to deliver the low-carbon, low-cost alternative for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), with support from fund manager, Ingenious. The new refuelling stations in Warrington, UK (Europe’s biggest station) and Northampton are capable of refuelling more than 1,000 HGVs every day, more than doubling the 600-per-day capacity of CNG Fuels’ existing stations at Leyland, Lancashire and Crewe, Cheshire.

The ’emerging’ investment opportunities in UK renewables

A decade ago, renewable energy in the UK would have conjured up images of two things: wind turbines and solar panels, since these were the main focus of media attention, government subsidies and investor inflows. Ten years later, the investment universe for this sector has thankfully come on in leaps and bounds, providing excellent opportunities for investors to derive a stable income stream from a diversified array of renewable infrastructure assets. For example, anaerobic digestion (AD) technology is a growing sector within the UK energy market, using household food waste to produce clean biogas which can be used to power anything from delivery trucks to central heating.

Bioenergy generated 12% of UK renewable electricity in Q3 2019

UK renewable electricity generation increased by 16% in Q3 2019, compared with the same period in 2018. According to the latest figures by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the share of total electricity generation from renewables – 38.9% – is the highest ever recorded and marginally exceeds the share of electricity generation from gas for the first time. The BEIS figures show the increase was largely due to increased load factors for wind, as well as renewable capacity. In Q3 2019, generation from bioenergy (including plant biomass, animal biomass, anaerobic digestion and sewage gas) stood at 8.9 terawatt-hours (TWh), up by 0.2 TWh or 1.9% year-on-year.

Organic waste has huge untapped potential to provide clean energy around world

The world’s biogas and biomethane resources could cover 20% of global gas demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to new IEA report. The world is only using a fraction of the potential to produce gas from organic waste, which could cover around 20% of today’s global demand for gas, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency released today. Modern societies and economies produce increasing amounts of organic waste – such as agricultural residues, food waste and animal manure – that can be used to produce biogas and biomethane, clean energy sources with multiple potential benefits for sustainable development.
