Anaerobic digestion industry welcomes Environment Plan soil health goal

January 12, 2018 – The UK’s anaerobic digestion (AD) industry has welcomed a target from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for all of England’s soils to be “managed sustainably” by 2030, calling it “an important step in the right direction” towards restoring the UK’s soils. Defra’s 25-year environment plan, published this morning, calls for “good nutrient management practices” in soil management and pledges to work with industry “to encourage the use of low emissions fertiliser”.

Basics Of Biogas Upgrading

January 12, 2018 – This primer serves as an introduction for anaerobic digestion projects debating what type of gas upgrading system is right for their needs. This article references tables available in BioCycle Magazine in print. Several powerful incentives are driving biogas generators to consider upgrading their biogas to meet standards for pipeline injection and vehicle fuel markets. Producing renewable natural gas (RNG) can create opportunities to monetize lucrative RIN, or renewable identification number, credits under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard and generate carbon credits under state supported low carbon fuel standards.

Scotland and green gas: towards the achievement of the energy goals

January 12, 2018 – The Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy requires that at least 50% of all Scotland’s heat, transport, and electricity consumption have to be supplied from renewable sources by 2030. According to ADBA – Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association – an important contribution for the achievement of these “ambitious but necessary” targets can be given by the green gas.

Home biogas: turning food waste into renewable energy

January 12, 2018 – Last night I cooked my family a delicious pasta dinner using biogas energy. This morning we all had eggs cooked on biogas. I’m not sure what’s for dinner tonight, but I know what will provide the energy for cooking: biogas. And not just any biogas – it’s home biogas, produced in our suburban backyard, as part of my ongoing “action research” into sustainable energy practices.

Certification scheme will “revolutionize” UK anaerobic digestion industry

January 15, 2018 – A newly launched certification scheme could be a breath of fresh air for the UK’s anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industries, according to Duncan McPherson, finance director at CooperOstlund. As 2017 drew to a close, the UK’s Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) launched a new AD certification scheme, the first of its kind in the UK, designed to support operators of AD plants in improving their operational, environmental, and health and safety performance, in particular in terms of energy generation and digestate quality.

Velocys: Envia seeks EPA approval to generate D7 RINs

January 16, 2018 – Velocys plc has announced that Envia Energy, the joint venture plant that utilizes its technology, has applied for a fuel pathway approval under the Renewable Fuel Standard to produce D7 cellulosic diesel renewable identification numbers (RINs). According to Velocys, Envia makes drop-in fuel from biogas and natural gas via gas-to-liquids technology featuring a Fischer-Tropsch process. Its facility, located adjacent to Waste Management’s East Oak landfill in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was on track to reach final operational capacity in late 2017.

In Germany, biogas could save 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year

January 17, 2018 – DVGW – the German technical and scientific commission for gas and water – has produced a roadmap to present to the government its research programme on the benefits of using biogas in the German heating and transport sectors. The aim is to repeat the success achieved in electricity production, with clear economic and environmental benefits: it is potentially possible to produce as much as 100 TWh of energy through biogas (10% of current needs). Moreover, using it to replace coal and lignite could save up to 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
